concerning riggers...

Sanity is a madness put to good use.
- George Santayana

there are some people groups that live among us that are different: carnies, muffler machanics, and riggers.

while nothing in the world terrifies me quite like the prospect of taking a carnival ride that is both assemled and disassembled in a few hours by someone who has recieved no formal training and is doing good to have a high school diploma, there is something majorly askew about riggers.

descended from the steel walkers you've seen in 19th century photographs eating thier lunch on a beam 97 stories in the air, these events techs lack both fear of death and personal hygene. their feats of daring in tasks as mundane as placing a chain motor or pick-point is truly awe inspiring, yet the amount of prudence shown in walking an eight inch beam, sixty feet in the air without safety is nothing short of stupid.

they look like carnies yet share the same toys as rock climbers (ropes, carabiners, pulleys and the like) and have a diet that consists mainly of marlboro's and coffee, as i've never seen one consume solid food.

like an aboriginal tribe they pride themselves in thier lack of personal grooming, thier hair neither long, nor short, seldom do they shower or shave, and never do they look you in the eye.

they charge one hundred dollars and hour to work at thier own pace, and commonly complain about any task they are given. they are truly a surley bunch, probably because of their nocturnal lifestyle.

with few attributes commonly refered to as "pleasant" they are cast aways in the profesional world, seen only as a necassary evil.

having said all this...thier fun to watch.

have a nice day.
